Software Radio Beacon Receiver Project Goals

The overall goal of the Beacon Receiver project is to implement the hardware and software components necessary to receive and process satellite beacon signals from a variety of bands (150, 244, 400, 1067 MHz). The acquisition and processing will be done using the MIDAS-Mobile software radio platform. The result of the processing will be S4, SigmaPhi, and IEC/TEC measurements in near real time, at a regular interval, delivered to the [WWW] Madrigal database, and displayed by Madrigal using display routines optimized for the data characteristics. A calibration capability may be implemented if there is sufficient time.

In general an open source software radio approach will be taken to the implementation of the beacon reception and signal processing. The underlying hardware platform for data acquisition is largely specified and will impose some limitations on the design approach.

By duplicating the tuner boards and deploying them to existing ISIS/MIDAS-M platforms it will be possible to add the appropriate software to enable the ISIS nodes to obtain beacon receiver data.
